Cinematical Seven: Best Films for Gratuitous Male Nudity

Filed under: Cinematical Seven », Lists »

Cinematic nudity has always been a mainly female phenomenon. Heck, naked women bits are all over the place -- we see it on screen, television, billboards -- you name it. If you're a man who likes womanly skin, or happen to be someone who saw Knocked Up, you know about Mr. Skin. The entire website is dedicated to noting female nudity in film -- down to the type of skin displayed, the length of the nudity and part of film that it is shown in. Since its mention in the Judd Apatow comedy alone, the visitor count jumped 35%. But what about the male bits?

They're just not there. It's as if all boys are just treasure-trailing Ken dolls. In an article a few years ago, pop culture expert Mark Kingwell rationalizes: "Guys don't like to see penises in film, because they are either too small (in travel mode) and therefore not worth all the fuss, or too big (in action mode) and so threatening to self-esteem." Ah, the fragile male ego! Although male genitalia has been pretty scarce, it's increasingly finding its way on the big screen, and luckily for us, it's not just the Bad Lieutenant, Harvey Keitel variety.

While researching this Seven, I hit the video stores to see some of the more infamous examples of male nudity on film. At the top of the list is Ewan I Don't Mind Showing My Bits MacGregor's The Pillow Book. Unfortunately, I couldn't find it anywhere. I even tried Blockbuster, where the man behind the desk said: "The movie where Ewan MacGregor gets naked? No, we don't have it." In honor of the actor's most infamous de-robing, which I can't find to rent, you won't see the Trainspotting star on this list. And for that matter -- I could make another list with equally shocking or notable male nudity, but instead, I give you these seven. They span time, rationale, situations and levels of gratuitousness. Enjoy!

Tom Cruise Tapped to Play 'Edwin A. Salt'

This past weekend, while hunting for movies I never had a chance to see, I decided to pick up Breach on DVD. Inspired by the real-life story of FBI Agent-turned-Russian spy Robert Hanson, the film is one of those rare spring gems that went fairly unnoticed when it hit theaters. Those looking for an excellent drama should definitely check this out and -- wow -- though I never thought it was possible, I might be starting to actually like Ryan Phillippe. I mention Breach because this spy stuff is pretty hot right now, and Variety reports Tom Cruise might be looking to get this feet wet in a film that sort of reminds me of a mix between The Fugitive and The Bourne Whatever. Columbia Pictures is in talks to have Terry George (who helmed the magnificent Hotel Rwanda) direct Edwin A. Salt, with Cruise potentially playing the lead character.

The film follows a CIA officer (Cruise) who is fingered as a Russian sleeper spy, and subsequently sets out on a mission to not only prove his innocence, but also reunite with his family -- all while attempting to elude those who want his head on a silver platter. The script was penned by Kurt Wimmer (The Recruit, Ultraviolet), while Lorenzo di Boneventura and Sunil Perkash are producing. Personally, this looks to be the perfect role for Cuise, who I've always found shines in parts that rely more on drama than non-stop action. And it also goes to show the man is looking to lose himself in some nice-looking films (Lions for Lambs, Valkyrie) instead of opting to jump on couches and offend depressed mothers. No word yet on whether Cruise will take on this film before those other two comedies (Men, Hardy Boys) he has planned, but here's hoping this film adds to a long line of upcoming Cruise vehicles that will definitely be worth our time.

Quickhits: Sandler is Jack, Phillips Likes Men and Here Comes Another Starship Troopers

Odds and ends from Wednesday:

  • Columbia Pictures has pre-emptively snatched up the spec script Jack and Jill as a possible starring vehicle for Adam Sandler. As of right now, the actor is only producing the pic through his Sony-based Happy Madison banner (appropriately named after the two films that made him). However, since he is involved in some capacity, it's only right to hype his possible involvement in front of the camera. The story is being under double secret probation right now, but is said to have something to do with fraternal twins.
  • Call me crazy but I've never been a big Todd Phillips fan. While Road Trip and Old School definitely had their high points, I've heard too many bad stories about the guy, so much so that they have tainted my view of his films. Nevertheless, the guy does know how to direct a successful commercial comedy and, according to Variety, Warner Brothers has tapped him to helm Men. Pic, which will be an Americanized version of the German 80's comedy, will tell of a man who becomes roommates with the guy his wife is having an affair with. Seeing as Phillips already has two films in pre-production (one of them being Old School 2), I'm curious to watch him pull it all off.
  • After shoving out a direct-to-dvd sequel, the folks behind Starship Troopers are now looking to produce a third installment of the cult hit. However, this time they want to go back to where it all began and, not only create a film much like the first, but also use some of the original talent. Yes folks, Casper Van Dien said he's involved and will be reprising the role of Johnny Rico. Killer awesome! Not for nothing Casper, but upon your return to the alien planet, perhaps you should try and find the acting career you accidentally left there the last time.
